About

In March 1998, the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic was established to serve patients in Alleghany County, Bath County and the City of Covington. The Alleghany Regional Hospital provided space for the Clinic.

Initially, physicians volunteered their time at the end of their office day. Demand for Clinic services quickly overwhelmed these volunteer doctors. In 2002, the Clinic received funding from the Virginia Healthcare Foundation to hire a Physician Assistant who provided much needed continuity of care for a growing caseload.

The Clinic continued to serve patients in the Alleghany Regional Hospital until 2007 when the Clinic moved to rental office space in a building in Low Moor. The space was redesigned to provide a reception area, office, and examination rooms on the first floor. The second floor housed offices and provided storage space.

In February 2011, the Clinic moved to its new home in the Adrales Building on West Riverside Street in Covington. Built as a doctor’s office, the new home for the Clinic offers well-equipped examination rooms and ample parking for patients and staff. The purchase of this facility affords the Clinic a permanent home well situated to serve our patients in all three major service areas.
Today

The Clinic is served by a staff of seven professionals: Executive Director, Physician Assistant, Pharmacy Services Coordinator, Registered Nurse and Every Woman’s Life Nurse (10 hours per week), Lifestyle Counselor, Medical Receptionist and Administrative Assistant who work with our volunteer physicians to provide primary medical care, prescription medications and wellness training for uninsured adults in Alleghany County, Bath County, and the City of Covington. Patients are seen by appointment in our Covington Clinic Monday through Thursday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, and Fridays 7:30 AM until Noon. Prescriptions are ordered by a certified pharmacy technician. Prescriptions can be picked up during regular Clinic hours.

Since its inception in 1998, the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic has enjoyed the generous financial support of The Alleghany Foundation.
